Personality: It seems like a daunting task to analyze Raphael, one of the four archangels, but understanding the angel is easy if you look at three things: His name, his empathy levels, and his relationship to Enoch, the main character in El Shaddai. First, Raphael’s name basically means ‘God heals’, and that’s his job-he heals and helps out whoever god orders him to. To help him in this task, he’s given greater empathy than most angels. The empathy of a normal angel basically amounts to being able to feel sad when shown a picture of a sad puppy but not being able to understand complex emotions in others and know that others have different motives and worldviews. Angels are hardwired to believing that God is always right and wouldn’t be able to understand why, after being ordered to kill a man’s wife, why the husband would be sad, as it was the will of God and God cannot be wrong.
However..Raphael, thanks to his job does understand a little bit more...but he would most likely just apologize to the husband, saying that he was sorry but that this is the will of God. However, this doesn’t mean that Raphael can’t form tight relationships with humans, Raphael is-excluding Lucifel-the Archangel that's in second place for the most non-mechanical game speech, while the one in first place would be Michael. Raphael also isn’t afraid to ask small questions when he is puzzled about something, as he does ask Enoch a few questions during portions of the game about whether people are celebrating the arrival of the Grigori and if he can see Lucifel.
But..when it comes to getting Enoch out of his despair and purifying himself, Raphael doesn’t speak much and continues to say little for the rest of the game because Enoch has been thinking that God might be wrong a little, and Raphael isn’t quite sure how to help him with this problem. The idea of someone else thinking that God might be wrong-especially Enoch-is almost foreign to him..however, he does keep encouraging Enoch when he’s about to die to keep moving, so it is probable that he might decide to seek out information in order to better do his job and to not make his friends and people he’s working with suffer.
Also, in The Flowers for Lucifel interview, Lucifel states that he is the most optimistic of the Archangels, and is easy to get along with because of that. However, since he's a healer, he also takes a support role and isn't a fighter on the frontlines. Enoch says that he feels a sense of peace from the angel, which would also work with his job. It would be weird to have an angel of healing make you feel scared or sick.
Abilities: Raphael, as his name states, is able to heal all illnesses and sicknesses provided that it’s part of his orders from God. If you remove him from God, he’ll probably start trying to heal everyone he can because he isn’t quite sure as to who God wants to die yet. He can physically revive people, but not much, and would probably only be able to do this once every month in Animus. He is also able to turn into a swan and has a spiritual body where normal people can’t see him and only those who are blessed by the angels or God can.
His is also able to purify Vileness and can sense where it is and when people are contaminated with it. The Vileness may translate to the Darkness in other games, so it probable that he would be able to sense, for example, if Riku from Kingdom Hearts had the Darkness. However, it's the mod's call as to whether or not he can. If the mod's don't make a call, I will say that he can. He is also able to sense souls and where they are, since he's able to say that he can sense the presence of a little girl following Enoch.
